Blog: New Plasma Themes Coming to MocaccinoOS

One of the highlights of the upcoming MocaccinoOS release is the addition of new Plasma desktop themes available directly out of the box.

Users can now choose between a clean light appearance and a modern dark desktop, both designed to provide a consistent experience across KDE Plasma, applications, and system components.

Two Looks, One Experience

The new themes share the same visual identity while offering different styles depending on user preference.

Light Theme

Clean and bright appearance
Excellent readability
Ideal for well-lit environments
Minimal and distraction-free desktop

Dark Theme

Modern and elegant design
Reduced eye strain in darker environments
Consistent dark styling throughout Plasma and KDE applications
Optimized for extended desktop sessions

Both themes include matching window decorations, Plasma styling, and application integration to provide a polished desktop experience.

Built on Plasma 6

The upcoming release ships with:

KDE Frameworks 6.25

Wayland by default
Linux 6.18.36 kernel

Combined with MocaccinoOS optimizations and a carefully tuned Plasma setup, the result is a fast and responsive desktop environment suitable for everyday computing, development, and gaming.

MocaccinoOS aims to provide sensible defaults while still giving users the freedom to personalize their desktop experience.

Whether you prefer a bright workspace during the day or a darker environment in the evening, both themes are available immediately after installation.

Blog: Niri + Noctalia on MocaccinoOS

From Discord to Documentation: Setting Up Niri + Noctalia on MocaccinoOS

It started like many things do in open source — with a question in the Discord server.

Someone popped into the channel asking if anyone had managed to get niri running on MocaccinoOS with the Noctalia shell. They’d heard good things about the scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor and wanted to try something different from the usual desktop environments MocaccinoOS ships. Nobody had documented it yet, so I decided to figure it out.

Installing the Pieces

The first step was straightforward enough. layers/niri lives in the default desktop repository:

For the rest — apps/alacritty, apps/fastfetch, and apps/noctalia — the community repository needs to be enabled first. These provide the terminal emulator, system info tool, and the Quickshell runtime (qs) that Noctalia runs on.

Configuring Niri

With the packages installed, two things need to be added to ~/.config/niri/config.kdl. First, comment out waybar since Noctalia ships its own panel. Then add the Noctalia startup line:

spawn-at-startup "qs" "-c" "noctalia-shell"

The Grey Square

After logging into niri from SDDM, I was greeted by a grey square and nothing else. No panel, no launcher, just a grey void. Niri was running — but nothing else was.

The qs binary was there (/usr/bin/qs), the spawn-at-startup line was in the niri config, and journalctl showed that qs had actually launched and consumed memory for 16 seconds before silently dying. Something was wrong, but nothing was complaining about it.

The culprit turned out to be simple: ~/.config/quickshell/noctalia-shell/ didn’t exist. The apps/noctalia package installs the qs binary but not the shell configuration itself. Quickshell found nothing to run and exited cleanly without a word.

The Missing Piece

Noctalia’s shell configuration needs to be installed manually to the home directory. It’s a deliberate separation — the runtime is packaged, but the shell itself is user-owned configuration:

After that, logging back into niri brought up Noctalia in all its glory — wallpaper-based color scheme, notification center, app launcher, the works.

One More Thing

With Noctalia running, I tried launching Steam and hit a familiar wall: “Unable to open a connection to X”. Niri is a pure Wayland compositor and doesn’t include XWayland out of the box. For X11 applications like Steam to work, xwayland-satellite is needed. Niri’s own log had been warning about this from the start:

The Complete Recipe

A Discord question turned into a complete setup guide. The full recipe for getting niri + Noctalia running on MocaccinoOS:

Install layers/niri from the desktop repository
Install apps/alacritty, apps/fastfetch, and apps/noctalia from the community repository
Run the curl command to install the Noctalia shell config to your home directory
Log out and select Niri from your login manager’s session menu
Optionally install apps/xwayland-satellite for X11 app compatibility

It’s a small setup cost for a genuinely beautiful and different desktop experience. The full instructions are now on the MocaccinoOS desktop environments page.

Issues and improvements

Added a safe graphics boot option to live images and GRUB. This uses nomodeset and can help systems with problematic NVIDIA GPUs boot successfully. It’s recommended to use this option until proprietary drivers are installed. ( https://github.com/mocaccinoOS/mocaccino/issues/191 )
Updated the default wallpaper.
- An additional wallpaper pack is now available in the repositories (themes/mocaccino-wallpapers-extra).
Fixed the default wallpaper configuration in XFCE.
Continued development of Vajo (GUI/TUI frontend for Luet):
- Added support for rolling back to previous snapshots
- Introduced snapshot pinning (stay on a selected snapshot)

We’re excited to announce the release of MocaccinoOS v25.09. With this milestone, we’ve updated our versioning scheme to better reflect our rolling-release nature.

From now on, MocaccinoOS will follow the year.month format (YY.MM). This makes it clearer when a snapshot was published, while keeping the system continuously up to date.

Enjoy the latest improvements and optimizations in v25.09 — fast, minimal, and gaming-ready as always.

Issues and improvements:

MocaccinoOS v25.09 builds upon the entire 1.8.x series, encapsulating significant refinements without reintroducing old issues. Highlights include:

Performance enhancements: Across releases, binaries have been rebuilt with more aggressive compiler flags for better speed and leaner size.
Improved hardware and compatibility support:
- Intel Xe and ARC Battlemage detection code integrated.
- Additional udev rules for older HDD detection.
Flatpak sandboxing fixes (notably for apps like Nextcloud).
Installer updates: Calamares now correctly applies user-selected system languages during installation.
EFI status reminder: Some older UEFI systems may require BIOS legacy mode due to EFISTUB limitations (still unresolved).

These enhancements are now unified in v25.09, adopting our new year.month versioning aligned with our rolling-release cycle.

Hello everybody!

We have decided to finally release MocaccinoOS 1.0 “Lisa”. Many thanks for the feedback we got during the beta stage. Also many thanks to our patrons who supported the project financially.

Although we are releasing version 1.0 this doesn’t mean everything is perfect yet. Many things still need to be improved, for instance artwork, themes and documentation. Hopefully we can work together with the community to achieve this in a matter of months.

Happy new 2022! Another year has passed, and yet we are here, really close to release an alpha release. Meanwhile, we are sharing updates and new packages available in our repositories.

Maui shell

As you might have heard Maui shell was recently announced, and we are happy to share with you that is officially available in our development repositories as experimental version and going to land into stable repositories very soon.

In order to install Maui shell, just run:

luet install layers/maui-shell

Currently, it might be required a reboot in order to log-in as a first time.

We are also working on a dedicated ISO flavor with LightDM and Maui shell, stay tuned.

Fynedesk

If you don’t know about fynedesk, maybe you should. FyneDesk is an easy to use Linux/Unix desktop environment following material design. It is built using the Fyne toolkit and is designed to be easy to use as well as easy to develop.

Fynedesk is available in our development repositories and going to land into stable repositories very soon.

In order to install Fynedesk, just run:

luet install layers/fynedesk

We are also working on a dedicated ISO flavor with LightDM and fynedesk, stay tuned.

We have been developing an alpha version of the updater app of mOS. It is currently available in the development repositories, and you can download it already with:

luet install apps/mos-updater

you can run it in the terminal with mos-updater or via the application menu.

If upgrades are available, a button will be present which if pressed will start upgrades automatically in the background. The GUI is intentionally simple to just handle upgrades and display notification upgrades to the user.

Dear community,

Where we at first, with all good intentions, wanted to work on the binary end of Funtoo and strenghten both projects we ran into our first technical issue preventing us to quickly go ahead and develop against Funtoo. Not that that would scare us of, oh no, we decided to make this a R&D project and one of our developers was working fully on this.

Meanwhile the other team members were focusing their efforts for a MocaccinoOS Desktop alpha and pushing forward on developing a Luet based repository that is based on a layered concept and still originates on Gentoo Portage tree.

As weeks and months passed, several issues got resolved, but the projects really grew appart from eachother. Now that the R&D Funtoo/MocaccinoOS project lead decided to leave and work on his own fork within the Funtoo project it is time for us to let go of the initial idea of working together with Funtoo. We wish you luck in all future new endeavours.

MocaccinoOS Desktop hopes to release a first alpha image soon. Meanwhile we are always looking for help! Feel free to contact us in our slack channel!
